Keep Your Cool

I thought this particular tip would be timely right now, since both hurricane season and vacation season are well underway.

A while ago, one of George's professors was looking for a way to tell how long the power had been out while he was away on vacation. He wanted to be able to tell whether the power had been off in his home long enough to spoil the food in the refrigerator. People suggested various monitoring devices that could be rigged inside the fridge, but George came up with the simplest solution: Put an ice cube inside a small glass in the freezer. When you get home from your trip, check and see whether and how much the ice cube has melted.
