Making It Easier to Be Legal
This article about legal immigrants struck a chord with me. I remember how difficult it was to get my brother-in-law's green card back in 1998 when he was getting ready to marry my sister. We actually worried for a while that the wedding would have to be postponed, but fortunately our senator and his immigration lawyer (who was invited to the wedding) came through.
That's why I'm not completely supportive of the plan to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants right now. To me, it seems like that's putting the cart before the horse. First, the legal immigration process needs to be fixed so it doesn't take people so many years and so much money to immigrate. Maybe if it weren't so hard to move to the U.S. legally people wouldn't be as tempted to go outside the law.
